The tradition of passing special pieces of heirloom jewelry, down trough multiple generation. has been practiced for centuries. Virtually every woman owns at least one jewelry box, filled with a lifetime or even several lifetimes, of precious old memories. This piece can become an heirloom.

Have you had a piece of jewelry in your jewelry box forever? has a special item been passed on to you from a family member, but you don’t like how it looks?
Most people have old jewelry items that are either out of style, worn out, or just not the right style for them anymore. I can offer all kinds of suggestions for using the gold and gemstones you have in a new and beautiful piece of jewelry. I will credit the value of your old gold toward the new gold in your design.
In this post, I’ll show you an example of such practice with a redesign of an Amethyst necklace and earrings I got from a women named Rita A.
Rita brought in her old jewelry. The necklace would not lay flat, the earrings were uncomfortable and I could tell that  by redesigning they could be stunning new jewelry.
Here is a picture of the amethyst necklace in its original design:

Before (after cleaning)
Rita told me that this necklace is 40 years old and though she like the way the gems looks, she doesn’t like to wear it because it’s always twisting on her neck and it’s not colourful enough.
what I decided to do is to detach the rings that was connecting between the gems, I refined the rings that was left and I selected  contrasting color and shape gemstones and pearls and the necklace was transformed into a  fine piece of jewelry.
here is some pictures from the process:

Detaching the old joint rings

Choosing gemstones

And here is the final result. as you can see i have added the following gemstones: Peridot, Dark Amethyst, Pink Pearl and Iolite. now the colors complete each other. The necklace is more flexible but it does not twist on the neck like it did before.
Rita is getting redesigned and on of a kind necklace.

Now to the Earrings.
these are antique white gold earrings with diamonds and pearl. Rita said she really love the earrings but they hurts her ear when she wear them. she also mentioned that her two daughters loves the earrings but she can’t give the earrings just to one of them.

Earrings Before

well, maybe I can transform the earrings she loves so much into something that both of her daughters could use. why not make the into two necklaces…
The first thing that I had to do is to disconnect the studs and to clean the pieces. I added a pear-shape gem under each one (Peridot and a Pearl)

Choosing the gems

Here is the final result:
